Two ways to scrap a vehicle — which one fits you?

Both are legitimate. The right choice depends on whether you want cash on the metal or the government's road-tax rebate on a new vehicle.

Regular scrap dealer

Best if you just want cash for the metal.

  • Pays you the scrap value of the metal — usually a bit more than a centre would, gram-for-gram.
  • Cash or UPI on the spot, no long paperwork.
  • Works for any vehicle, any age, any condition.
  • No Certificate of Deposit — you don't get the road-tax rebate.
  • You're responsible for deregistering the vehicle with your RTO.

Government-authorised scrap centre RVSF

Best if you're buying a new vehicle and want the official tax rebate.

  • Issues an official Certificate of Deposit — worth up to ~25% road-tax rebate and a registration-fee waiver on your next vehicle.
  • Many manufacturers add a discount (often ~5%) on top.
  • The centre handles deregistration with the RTO for you.
  • You still get paid the scrap value of the metal — typically a touch lower than a kerbside dealer in exchange for the certificate.
  • Best for end-of-life vehicles (15+ years for private, 8–10 for many commercial).

Find a government-authorised centre in your state →

Not sure? If your vehicle is healthy and you're not buying a new one immediately, a regular dealer is usually simpler. If you're upgrading and the vehicle is overage, the Certificate of Deposit is worth thousands — go to a government-authorised centre.

What you'll need when you go

  • The vehicle's Registration Certificate (RC).
  • Valid ID (Aadhaar, PAN, etc.).
  • An NOC from the financer if the vehicle was on a loan.
  • The centre handles deregistration with the RTO/VAHAN on your behalf — you don't have to chase the RTO separately.

What you get back

  1. The scrap value of the metal (typically a small amount less than a kerbside dealer would pay).
  2. A Certificate of Deposit — present this at any dealer when you buy a new vehicle to claim the road-tax rebate (~25% for private, ~15% commercial, set by the state), waiver of the registration fee, and often a manufacturer discount (~5%).

Want a cash-only sale and don't need the certificate? See your city's car scrap dealers or bike scrap dealers — usually quicker, paid in cash, no RTO paperwork.
