Plastic Scrap Recycling in India: Types, Rates, and Where to Sell

Plastic Recycling: An Overlooked Opportunity

India generates approximately 3.5 million tonnes of plastic waste annually. While metal scrap gets most of the attention, plastic recycling is a growing market driven by government mandates, corporate sustainability commitments, and rising virgin plastic prices. Knowing which plastics have value and how to sell them can turn waste into meaningful income.

Understanding Plastic Types by Resin Code

Every plastic product has a recycling symbol (a triangle with a number 1-7) that indicates its resin type. Different types have very different scrap values:

PET (Type 1) — ₹15-25/kg

Polyethylene Terephthalate is used in water bottles, soft drink bottles, and food containers. This is the most valuable and most commonly recycled plastic in India. PET bottles are recycled into polyester fiber for textiles — India's PET recycling rate is actually among the highest in the world because the economics work well.

Selling tip: Remove caps (they're usually PP, a different plastic) and rinse bottles. Compressed/crushed bottles take less space and are easier for dealers to transport.

HDPE (Type 2) — ₹12-20/kg

High-Density Polyethylene is found in milk jugs, shampoo bottles, detergent containers, and plastic bags. It's valued for its strength and is recycled into pipes, lumber, and new containers.

PVC (Type 3) — ₹8-15/kg

Polyvinyl Chloride is used in pipes, window frames, and electrical cable insulation. PVC recycling is more complex due to its chlorine content, but dedicated recyclers exist, especially for PVC pipes.

LDPE (Type 4) — ₹8-12/kg

Low-Density Polyethylene includes plastic bags, cling wrap, and squeeze bottles. While recyclable, LDPE is harder to collect in volume because individual items are very light.

PP (Type 5) — ₹10-18/kg

Polypropylene is found in bottle caps, yogurt containers, food packaging, and automotive parts. It's becoming increasingly valuable as recycled PP demand grows.

PS (Type 6) — ₹5-10/kg

Polystyrene includes disposable cups, plates, and thermocol (expanded polystyrene). Low value due to its bulky nature and the difficulty of cleaning food contamination.

Other (Type 7) — Usually Not Recyclable

Mixed or layered plastics (like multi-layer packaging) are generally not recyclable through conventional methods. Some cement kilns accept these as co-processing fuel.

How to Collect and Prepare Plastic for Sale

Sorting is Everything

Mixed plastic is worth ₹5-8/kg. Sorted, clean single-resin plastic can be worth 2-3x more. If you're collecting from a housing society or commercial establishment, set up separate bins for PET, HDPE, and general plastic.

Clean and Dry

Plastic contaminated with food, oil, or chemicals is rejected by many recyclers or bought at heavily discounted rates. A quick rinse and air-drying significantly improves value.

Compress and Bale

Plastic is bulky relative to its weight. Crushing bottles and compressing bags reduces volume by 60-80%, making it practical to store and transport. Some serious collectors invest in manual baling machines (₹15,000-50,000) to create compact bales.

Where to Sell Plastic Scrap

The plastic recycling chain in India works differently from metals:

  • Kabadiwallas: Buy mixed plastic at ₹5-10/kg. Convenient but lowest rates.
  • Aggregators/Dealers: Buy sorted plastic at better rates. Many are listed on ScrapRates.in.
  • Direct to recyclers: If you can supply 500+ kg of single-resin sorted plastic monthly, recycling units will often buy directly at wholesale rates.
  • Corporate buyback programs: Companies like Bisleri, Coca-Cola, and ITC have started plastic collection programs that may offer competitive rates.

The Business Case for Plastic Recycling

India's ban on single-use plastics (effective from 2022) and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations are creating structured demand for recycled plastic. Companies need to prove they're recycling a percentage of the plastic they produce, and they need suppliers of recycled material. This regulatory push means plastic scrap values are likely to increase over the coming years.

For small-scale collectors, the key to profitability is volume and sorting. A collector who can supply 1 tonne of sorted PET monthly to a recycler can earn ₹15,000-25,000 in revenue — not bad for material that was headed for landfill.
